Thirty four years have slipped by since record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia last managed to climb beyond the preliminary rounds of the CAF Champions League.
Now, this Sunday September 6 at the Nyayo National Stadium, K’Ogalo will be gracing the continental stage for the 18th time when they welcome Egyptian giants Pyramids FC for the first leg of the opening preliminary round of the 2026 edition.
Gor, decorated with a record 22 Sportpesa league crowns, are staging their grand return to the Champions League after wrestling the domestic silverware back last season from first time winners Kenya Police FC.

Come Sunday, Gor will be logging their 18th Champions League campaign since their inaugural appearance in 1969, a feat that places them ahead of every other Kenyan outfit in terms of continental outings, with bitter rivals Tusker FC and AFC Leopards trailing closely on 13 and 12 appearances respectively.
Yet for all their experience,Gor are still chasing that elusive quarterfinal breakthrough in the CAF Champions League since they first stepped onto this stage in 1969.
The curious twist is that despite being Kenya’s most seasoned campaigners in this tournament, they have never gone as far as their fiercest rivals.
To put it in perspective, AFC Leopards and Tusker FC have both have tasted a semifinal football in the CAF Champions League once each.
Ingwe, a powerhouse of the 90s, were the first Kenyan side to earn that honour back in 1968 when the competition was still known as the African Cup of Champions Clubs.
Tusker, then operating under the name “Kenya Breweries”, followed suit and became the second and only other Kenyan team to reach the semifinals in 1973.

Ironically, the very year Gor made their debut in 1969, they managed to power all the way to the quarterfinals, only to bow out 4-2 on aggregate to Egyptian outfit Ismaily.
They then went into hibernation for eight long years before resurfacing in the Champions League in 1976, a season that carried extra weight as they conquered the Kenyan League without a single defeat under the guidance of legend Alan Thigo.
That campaign saw them bag another quarterfinal berth after eliminating Saint George of Ethiopia in the first round, setting up a date with Al Merrikh of Sudan.
They sawoff the Sudanese challenge to book a quarterfinal showdown against MC Algier of Algeria, where they suffered a painful 7-3 aggregate defeat.

They returned to the same continental showpiece in 1977, 1980, 1984, and 1991, before making another quarterfinal run in 1992.
That year, they got past Libya’s Al Ittihad in the first round, overcame Canon Yaounde of Cameroon in the second round, and then squared off against Al Hilal of Sudan in the last eight.
The Sudanese side mounted a stunning 2-0 comeback in the return leg at home to force the tie into penalties, where Gor’s nerve failed them as they slumped to a 4-2 shootout loss.
This period of the African Cup of Champions Clubs also brought its share of turmoil for the club.
In 1984, they found themselves on the wrong side of CAF’s disciplinary hammer after a chaotic encounter against Egyptian heavyweights Zamalek.
The referee dismissed midfielder Abbas Magongo, and defender George Otieno Solo famously tore up the red card in protest.
CAF responded by slapping Gor Mahia with a two year continental ban and suspending several key players alongside coach Len Julians, a setback that arguably robbed them of a chance to push even further that year.

Now fast forward, and three and a half decades have come and gone, yet the Kenyan champions are still yearning for that firm grip on group stage qualification, an achievement that has continued to elude them even as the tournament morphed into the revamped CAF Champions League format in 1997.
To make matter more telling, even when that transition occurred, Gor Mahia endured a 17 year famine before finally making their way back into this competition in 2014.
Now they are preparing for their ninth appearance since that return, and they are still searching for a way past the first or second preliminary round.
History also seems to repeat itself, because just like in 1984, Gor were supposed to feature in the 2023 edition but were completely locked out by CAF after their club license was revoked.
The governing body cited a breach of Article 60 of the CAF Men’s Club Licensing Regulations, stemming from unpaid salary arrears owed to three former foreign players which had not been cleared before the strict registration cut off.
So who are Gor Mahia up against in the 2026 CAF Champions League, and does any history exist between these two sides?
Yes, the historical threads are there, with Kenya and Egyptian clubs having crossed paths before in this very competition.
On Sunday, Gor will be welcoming Pyramids FC to Nyayo, marking the fourth Egyptian opponent they have encountered in the CAF Champions League, not counting their Confederation Cup engagements.
The previous Egyptian sides they have faced include Zamalek, Ismaily, and most recently Al Ahly back in 2024, who handed Gor a painful lesson with 3- 0 victories both home and away to complete a 6 -0 aggregate rout.
To date, Gor are yet to register a single win against any North African opposition in this competition.
Their only saving grace came in 1994 when they managed a 1- 1 draw with Zamalek, though they ultimately succumbed away from home.

This means Charles Akonnor and his charges have a monumental task on their hands as they look to topple the Egyptian giants and keep their hopes alive.
Should they manage to gun down Pyramids and progress to the second preliminary round, they will then face either El Merreikh Bentiu or Heegan FC.
From there, they would finally punch their ticket to the group stage for the first time in the tournament’s revamped era and set their sights on even greater heights.
But all that dreaming must wait, because first they have to find a way past Pyramids, and that is anything but a straightforward assignment.
